Kwakiutl District Council Heath Office
The Kwakiutl District Council Health (KDCH) provides preventative and health promotion services for 7 member nations on-reserve residents on northern Vancouver Island. The Member Nations include:
· Kwakiutl
· Mamalilikulla Qwe’Qwa’Sot’Enox Band
· Da’naxda’xw First Nation
· Wei Wai Kai First Nation
· Wei Wai Kum First Nation
· Kòmoks Band
· Kwakiah Band
There are approximately 1400 persons eligible to access the KDCH services that cover a broad range of health activities and interventions, including:
· Community health nursing,
· Communicable disease control (including STDs, HIV/AIDS. TB and other reportable communicable diseases),
· Pre and post natal care;
· Diabetes prevention , care and treatment and lifestyle choices;
· HIV/AIDS prevention and health promotion
· Tobacco cessation strategies
· Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder mentoring program
· Crystal Methamphetamine prevention
· Mental Health crisis counselling
· Addictions prevention and health promotion including supportive counselling pre and post treatment
· Mental Health and Addictions prevention and health promotion activities
· Home and Community Care programs including personal care workers in the home
Base funding for program delivery is through the Health Transfer agreements with the FNIHB of Canada, specifically targeted funding from FNIHB, VIHA and other sources and grants based on proposal submissions.
KDCH employs qualified professional and paraprofessional staff to deliver the programs. There include:
· Registered Nurses, Bachelor of Science Degree
· Registered Clinical Counsellor, Mental Health and addictions
· Mental Health and Addiction Workers
· Community Health Representatives
· Clerical and administrative supports: Receptionists, clerks, bookkeeper
· Registered Dietician
Services are delivered on-reserve from 5 health centres:
· Campbell River
· Cape Mudge on Quadra Island
· Quinsam south of Campbell River
· Comox
· Fort Rupert south of Port Hardy
Hours of service are Monday to Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm
