Note: Dependent upon funding and/or financing and/or eligibility of band member:
- Homeowner writes a letter to Chief and Council requesting to have renovations done.
- Housing Officer is directed by Chief and Council to get a Building Inspector to inspect the home. The band member can either pay for the initial inspection and be reimbursed upon receipt of funding or the band will pay on the member’s behalf, the member would then owe the cost of the inspection to the band until funding is received. (The inspection can be CMHC or an independent inspector, depending on where the funding is coming from.)
- Homeowner then obtains a minimum of two estimates for the work identified in the inspection (three estimates is perferred).
- The Housing Officer then submits:
- Letter of request to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
- Environmental Assessment
- Details for the project (scope of work plan) and funding identification
Once the project is submitted, there is a wait while Indian & Northern Affairs or Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation reviews the submission.
The homeowner may be subject to paying a portion of the renovation. This can be done through borrowing, or from the homeowner's personal savings. A letter of verification of funding from the financial institution will be required.
